Rep. Eddie Bass <http://www.capitol.tn.gov/house/members/h65.html> , a retired county sheriff, has introduced a resolution in the Tennessee General Assembly affirming the role of the constitutional sheriff in Tennessee counties.  HJR771 <http://wapp.capitol.tn.gov/apps/BillInfo/Default.aspx?BillNumber=HJR0771> proposes an amendment to the Tennessee Constitution that would define the county sheriff as the chief law enforcement officer in his or her county.  The proposed amendment states:

The sheriff, who shall be the chief law enforcement officer of the county in which he or she is elected shall have full law enforcement jurisdiction over his or her county and will command said county with the highest ethical standards and professionalism to insure integrity.  The duties of the elected sheriff shall be as follows: It will be the duty of the elected sheriff to uphold this Constitution and the Constitution of the United States, to provide full law enforcement services through out his or her county, to assist all other municipal law enforcement agencies in his or her county, as well as providing law enforcement services for any municipality that elects not to have their own law enforcement agency.

Rand Cardwell, Tennessee State Director for OathKeepers <http://www.oathkeepers.org> reviewed a copy of this legislation and responded that the amendment “is much needed. To my knowledge, Knox and Shelby Counties, both Charter forms of government, usurped the Constitutional powers of the local Sheriff in their county charters. This bill fixes that problem.”

Currently the bill is assigned to the State Government Subcommittee <http://www.capitol.tn.gov/house/committees/sub-stategovt.html>  of the State and Local Government Committee <http://www.capitol.tn.gov/house/committees/government.html> in the Tennessee General Assembly.  Please contact the members of this subcommittee listed below and encourage them to support this resolution.

Sheriff

I want an "Oathkeeper" Sheriff if I can have one.
I don't want to see FEMA under any circumstances. Your friendly local Sheriff needs to own up to his authority and protect us from all enemies, foreign and domestic.
We don't need Martial Law, but fear it's going to be induced.
I'd like a Sheriff to tell FEMA they are not needed in his county, he has it under control.

What about Davidson county ?

The way I understand it the Davidson county Sheriff has NO law enforcement authority and because of that there are no officers with true deputy authority.
Would this fix that problem as well ?

It's on no ones radar

I don't think people understand the significance of the Sheriff. When in case of disaster or emergency, a majority of folks will believe FEMA or Homeland Security is the chief of law enforcement. Furthermore, I'll bet most sheriff's and deputy's don't know of the extent of the authority and responsibility. Somehow we've got to get law enforcement to accept this authority, but to uphold it with honor.
Its not an issue on anyone's radar, and we need to make an issue of it.
